Steelers’ Teryl Austin Drops Hint About Impressive Undrafted Outside Linebacker Who’s Turning Heads

The Pittsburgh Steelers' defense is poised to be one of the top units in the 2024 season. With one of the highest payrolls among defenses and standout players like TJ Watt, Minkah Fitzpatrick, Patrick Queen, and Cam Heyward, the Steelers boast playmakers at every level, fueling high expectations from fans for the upcoming year.'

When the Steelers released their unofficial depth chart for the 2024 season, Alex Highsmith was obviously listed as the starter at right outside linebacker. Behind him, Nick Herbig, entering his second season, is expected to build on an impressive rookie year. Markus Golden, initially listed as the third right outside linebacker, has since made a surprising decision to retire, shifting more focus to undrafted free agent Jacoby Windmon.

While it's challenging for an undrafted free agent to secure a roster spot or significant playing time, Windmon has a promising chance. Steelers Defensive Coordinator Teryl Austin recently spoke to the media and expressed his admiration for Windmon's performance, highlighting the undrafted player's impressive showing against the Houston Texans in the first preseason game.

“Yeah, he did a good job. He’s a good football player. And it’s funny because he’s had to – in a pinch in practice – had to play some outside backer for us, and inside backer, and he does a good job at both of them.”

Windmon made a notable impact in the preseason loss to the Texans, recording four total tackles and a pass deflection. His performance also caught the eye of his defensive doordinator, who continued to sing his praises.

Although this doesn’t guarantee Windmon a spot on the final roster, it indicates that the Steelers' coaching staff is taking a serious interest in him.

“I think when you watch him play, he’s got really good instincts, he has a really good feel for the game, he’s a good communicator, and he gets himself around the ball. So, he helped himself, I thought, this week.”

As the Steelers prepare to face the Buffalo Bills in their upcoming preseason game this Saturday, they are aiming for improved execution and a victory. While losing a preseason game isn't a catastrophe, it certainly isn't what Steelers fans are hoping for. Some of the issues during the 2023 season showed up once again in the Steelers game against the Texans. It's not quite time to hit the panic button as the Steelers performed better in the second half and again it's just preseason.

Fans always want to see their team perform at its best and build momentum as the regular season approaches. In their previous outing against the Texans, the Steelers faced challenges and struggled in various aspects of their game. There's still plenty of time for Pittsburgh to clean up some kinks.

Steelers' Jacoby Windmon Looking To Build Off Impressive Outing Against Houston

However, there were bright spots, with Windmon standing out and significantly boosting his chances of securing a spot on the final roster. As the team looks ahead, all eyes will be on how they adjust and perform against the Bills, hoping to make a strong statement and gain valuable confidence heading into the season.

Windmon is on a mission to secure his spot on the roster, with two more games to prove himself and potentially earn playing time. Steelers fans will be closely watching his progress as he aims to impress Austin and the rest of the coaching staff. With each game, Windmon has the opportunity to solidify his chances and showcase his skills on the field. The odds haven't been in Windmon's favor but he's taking advantage of every chance given to him.
